As a discerning scholar, political scientist, and advocate for America's foreign policy, Dr. Kirkpatrick is one of the modern era's wisest experts on geopolitical issues. For her brilliant and consistent service as America's international policy advisor, Dr. Kirkpatrick was granted the Medal of Freedom, our nation's highest civilian honor. She has also been awarded presidential medals by President Vaclav Havel of the Czech Republic, for promoting NATO enlargement, democracy and human rights, and President H.E. Arpad Goncz of Hungary for contributions to NATO enlargement and a democratic Europe. She also received in the last two years the 50th Anniversary Friend of Zion Award from the Prime Minister of Israel and the Casey Medal of Honor from the Center for Security Studies.
Dr. Kirkpatrick gained international attention through her strong projection of U.S. causes as a former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and as cabinet member for President Reagan from 1981 through 1985. She also served as a member of the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board from 1985 to 1990, the Defense Policy Review Board from 1985 to 1993 and chaired the Secretary of Defense Commission on Fail Safe and Risk Reduction from 1991 to 1992.
Dr. Kirkpatrick continues to shape national foreign policy on a multitude of issues such as trade, defense, and the international projection of democracy. She is Leavey Professor of Government at Georgetown University and a regular contributor of lucid Op-Ed articles in newspapers and journals. Dr. Kirkpatrick is a Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and serves as Co-Founder and Director of Empower America. In addition, she testifies yearly before Committees of the Senate and House of Representatives on national and international defense policy, focusing on matters of high importance to our national security, such as China's burgeoning military power, the dramatic proliferation of nuclear technology and nuclear threats, missile defense, the ABM treaty, and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, among others.
